The funny thing about resilience is that we usually only start to think of it when it’s been tested and our levels feel low.
You know that feeling of not being able to cope with just one more thing.
Or that reaction that you just can’t stop despite knowing it’s not how you really feel – or at least you may have hidden it in different circumstances.
Those things are our resilience telling us we may be low.
Conversely, when we’re challenged to our very core, when stress is high and when we go through something difficult but we find ways to cope, to manage and even sometimes thrive, that’s our resilience building, gaining momentum and helping us learn strategies to feel stronger and better.
It stands to reason that we can probably learn a thing or two from those who have resilient strategies, from those who’ve been through things and can tell us how it is to cope, and even from ourselves when we’ve surprised ourselves in tough times.
Of course ideally we’d all love high resilience, and to feel and be resilient all the time. But that’s not realistic – we’re human, we’re elastic; reacting and learning all the time to the situations and circumstances we find ourselves in. That’s why understanding how we best respond in different situations, and how we can use strategies to help us in future are brilliant ways for us to cope with the every day – our work, home life, balance (or lack of), our health, the way we communicate with others and more.
If we feel resilient (which is only our perspective after all), it stands to reason that we feel we can cope with the stresses and strains of life, which is a better way to be than feeling like we can’t.
