What’s happened since I left Instagram?

After my flounce from Instagram, and why it was no longer serving my brain (even if it did serve my business), here's what I've found this month in focusing my social media on LinkedIn:

Positives:

On Linkedin specifically:

  • Strategically using the platform without over-thinking so much or spending as much time online

  • Connecting with new people and communities

  • Sticking to content goals much easier

  • Talking more deeply with connections on their posts and in private message

The impact this is having on my business means I'm

  • Concentrating better on the tasks I’m doing without distraction

  • Able to complete a series of tasks and transition between them more freely

  • Noticing how much more focused I am

  • Feel clear headed and less lost in thought - particularly about what others might be doing and how I should do something

  • Focus to go deeper on tasks and projects I've been wanting to finish off

  • Making quicker decisions

I'm also noticing that I...

  • Miss ease of IG direct messages, tagging and sharing as much (but is that just because I have more followers on IG than on LI at the moment?)

  • Miss not seeing clients' stuff on IG, championing their work - at least in my head if I didn't directly share it

  • Miss not being able to tag others when I interview them if they’re not on LI or not active on it

  • Over think: ‘have I just rejected people? What if 'they' think that? Is it true? If it's not, why am I worried about it? Why not connect with them more on LI anyway? And does closing one social media platform you've invested in mean for the people left? Followers don’t see themselves as one homogenous group, unless a super fan or following a strong brand though…

A lot of the 'noticing' elements may just be because I've used IG longer than LI, and more in depth with it. So I wonder how that will fair in a few months, or by the end of the year?

In terms of what's been possible - I have to shout out to my brain on this one too.

I don't know if it's PURELY coming off IG, or also finally finding the right supplements and support for my body that I've needed for such a long time that hadn't been recognised until late last year.

Better support for my hormones and the ability to now absorb supplements properly (which has taken a decade since bowel cancer to identify properly) is leaving me with energy I haven't had in years.

I'm sleeping better, eating better, feeling brighter, and it's all adding to my sense of being able to focus, cut the stuff that I don't want to focus on and get on with life.

Which of course helps business. Which of course helps life. And on, and on.

It's enabled me distance from the fatigue and fog I've accumulated and realise how hard on myself I'd been. The constant chatter about not doing enough, not achieving enough, not showing up enough. Which is all relative anyway, and essentially arbitrary.

When we ask this of ourselves, we've really got to be more specific - who do I need to be showing up FOR, right now? Sometimes that's more public facing, out there, showing up (like on social media). Sometimes it's showing up mentally for ourselves or our loved ones, and accepting that there are times in our life that it's one over the other is OK.

I would be comparing myself to a 10 year ago me. Or one who still worked and commuted in London. Or one who still had a bowel. Or one who used to run in the Sussex hills 20 years ago. Talk about setting yourself up for failure.

Somehow, the fog and fatigue lifting, has enabled clarity to get on and be in the present and future, rather than constantly over-think the past.

This has resulted in being able to have, and hold, valuable conversations all month on business mindset.

Because I honestly think that if I'd have tried to arrange this across more than one platform, or to try to share lots of assets for each talk every time they happened, I would have been overwhelmed. Even with support, and even with systems set up.

Instead, I've set up one event, held the live and then been able to create a process to share the best bits from each conversation without it becoming a protracted process that doesn't happen.

Some of this might sound simple, and that I'm making being off a social media platform a bigger deal than it is.

But I TRULY believe, and can see how, the impact of one significant change has run right through my business to enable to be achieve so much more.

I'm not here - yet - saying this has ALREADY DOUBLED MY PROFITS. But I am telling you it's leading to very fruitful, valuable, meaningful conversations that I can make time for - be that for potential clients, peer conversations, networks, PR, or otherwise.
